A year gone by…(and Christmas opening times!)

Screed Giant Christmas 2018

With 2018 drawing to a close, we thought we’d reflect back on the year. Screed is an industry where things don’t change much, so sometimes it’s hard to see the progress that has been made. When you look at the wider construction picture, of course, things are a little different. The construction industry has continued to grow, especially in residential housing, and more and more people are extending or renovating their homes, which means that there is more demand for our products – good news!

Linoleum – Yes or “li”no?

For those of us who are old enough to remember growing up when there was no such thing as the internet or social media, you’ll probably think of Linoleum with mixed emotions. Lino was the flooring of choice in many houses because it was available in patterns, it was hard wearing and wipe clean (or at least easy to mop). It also brings memories of being very cold and not very comfortable underfoot, and those patterns in the Sixties and Seventies are still the cause of nightmares! In fact, there was almost a revolution against it as the decades progressed with it not even in the consideration list if you could afford something more luxurious. But Lino has seen a bit of a resurgence in recent times Continue reading “Linoleum – Yes or “li”no? “

The Answer May Be Underneath Your Nose, Or At Least Your Feet – Cellars!

cellar conversion

In recent years, properties with a usable cellar space have become a valuable asset to homeowners. A conversion isn’t just ideal for adding value to your property, but also an extra-dimension you can use to make your home a happy one. For families needing more living space, the idea of a cellar conversion is often easier (and cheaper if you already have a cellar to convert) than adding an extension to your home, especially if you are on a small plot or don’t want to lose precious garden space.

Flowing Screed levels the playing field

Flowing Screed gives a level floor

In some European countries flowing screed (liquid screeds that are fluid and need only a small amount of work by a screeder) accounts for up to 80% of the screed market. Here in the UK, however, this type of screed hasn’t been as successful in taking over the marketplace. This does seem quite surprising given the obvious benefits of improved productivity, superior product properties, especially when it comes to underfloor heating, and of course, being much easier to lay. It is particularly effective for larger flooring spaces as flowing screed remains strong and is self-levelling.  Continue reading “Flowing Screed levels the playing field”

Traditional vs Calcium Sulphate screeds – which one is right for you?

Traditional vs Calcium Sulphate screeds

Whilst traditional screeds continue to hold 80% of the market, calcium sulphate has been a big grower in recent years. This growth comes despite a lack of understanding from some quarters about its benefits and, in some cases, limitations. What does this mean for your own on-site use? Continue reading “Traditional vs Calcium Sulphate screeds – which one is right for you?”

Why should I soundproof my home?

Soundproof your home

For many people, noise is generally accepted as an everyday inconvenience, but by affecting people’s daily routine, health and quality of life, it is vitally important to protect our acoustic comfort. Not only is noise often unwanted and disturbing, it can also affect our health and overall well-being affecting many aspects of our lives, from communication to sleep and concentration. According to the World Health Organisation, there are at least seven adverse health effects as a result of noise pollution, some of which can be severe.  Continue reading “Why should I soundproof my home?”

Insulation – an energy efficient way to keep your home cool this summer.

Insulation is often thought of as a large blanket that helps keep your home warm in winter. Despite this being true, many people are unaware of the benefits that insulation can bring to your home all year round.
